Jan Eggermont is a cell physiologist studying cellular systems for ion and lipid transport and their role in human diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders. He graduated as MD (1987) and PhD (1991) at KU Leuven, Belgium. After a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Oxford (1991-1993) he obtained tenure at the Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven (1994). Currently he is full professor at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and teaches cell biology and physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven.
He has held various management positions. As founding director of the Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven (2007-2012) he took a particular interest in international recruitment, transferable skills development and career perspectives of young researchers. From 2011 to 2016, he was vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven during which period he was responsible for quality assurance of undergraduate biomedical education, examination and assessment policy and internationalization of undergraduate education. Since 2015 he is chair of the Board of Examiners for the admission examinations for medical doctors and dentists in Flanders. He also sits on the Board of Directors of AZ Herentals, a regional hospital in Flanders. Since October 2017 he chairs the Education Council of KU Leuven and is a member of the Council of Higher Education at the Flemish Education Council (Vlor).
