Prof. dr. Koenraad Smets is medical head of the Neonatal intensive care unit of the Ghent University Hospital . For his PhD he worked on chronic lung disease of prematurity. He is specialized in neonatal pneumology (congenital and acquired lung disease; invasive and non-invasive respiratory support). He has special interest in the consequences of drug abuse during pregnancy. As instructor for the neonatal life support (NLS) course at the European Resuscitation Council, he is very active in simulation training. He is candidate instructor for the Advanced Resuscitation of the Newborn Infant (ARNI) course at the Resuscitation Council UK in the United Kingdom, focusing on non-technical skills (crew resource management, communication). Prof. Smets is (co)author of more than 40 international peer-reviewed papers and is/was member of the jury in many doctoral- and masterthesis defences at various faculties. He is occasional reviewer for more than 20 international scientific journals.
